Cards on the table, I don’t really use a traditional wedding photography style anymore – heavily posed stuff. I still use some posing techniques, but its used with a heavy influence of reportage and artistic styles. Traditional styles of wedding photography are still used – simply because, for example its nice to get a photograph of the couple stood with the entire church in the background. In the true art of reportage wedding photography, events might run in a way that means the couple are never on their own in any one photograph, which isnt the end of the world for some couples, but others would like ‘special’ photographs of just the two of them. That’s were some direction is required from your wedding photographer. My traditional style is more modern, and whilst I can pose every aspect of a couples stance, I prefer to grab them, take them to a shooting location (outside the church, in the fields near the venue etc) were I have set up any required lighting, chosen the background (church, sunset etc) and then stand the couple in a roundabout way, but then just have a laugh whilst taking the photographs – giving a more natural style, modern traditional if you like. I mix this style with reportage – standing the couple in the most pleasing location, away from distraction, with the best possible light – but then let them do as they wish, walk holding hands, chat, dance, laugh – capturing it all in a more natural style, I then throw in some artistic twists….
